Immature Praying Mantis

 Steel Sculpture

Hand crafted, One of a kind

The praying mantis is a difficult subject and took considerable time to complete. I believe I have captured it in some detail. But, nobody does bugs like mother nature. All steel, forged, formed and assembled by MIG welding, textured and colored with a flame. Clear coated, glossy, to protect the colors and deter oxidation. This piece measures 24" long x 14" wide x 9" tall and weighs 6 1/2 lbs.

The abdomen was made by hot forging the top and bottom in two halves and welding them together. The head is ground from a solid piece of steel. Weld metal was added to make the eyes. The four hind legs are four different sizes of round stock, hot forged and welded at the joints. The front legs were formed by grinding and filing, then welded at the joints in a natural position. Wings have veins and texture ground into them.
